Should I buy the Carnival Cruise Drink Package?

So you decided to go on a cruise and you are all booked and now you teter with the decision to add the Carnival cruise drink package or not. While you may not want to shell out more money than you alredy have, you do want to make an informed decision. So, here are some things to think about to weigh your options:
The pluses:
  • You won’t have to worry about an alcohol budget and trying to ration how many drinks you have per day to stay within it;
  • You are free to order and enjoy top shelf liquors in your cocktails and frozen drinks (on liquor valued up to $50 that is);
  • Good for wine up to $50 glass unless you want to order a bottle at which point you’ll get 25% off;
  • In addition to alcohol are sodas, zero-proof frozen cocktails, energy drinks, specialty coffees, hot tea, 500 mL bottled water and other non-alcoholic bottled beverages, so there’s almost no drink on the ship that’s not included in the drink package;
  • By prepaying your drink package, you can focus your budget on other things and not worry about this.

The minuses:
  • Your cabin mate will have to purchase it as well – no exceptions, even with a doctor’s note;
  • Factor in how much time you’ll be spending in port versus how much time you will be on the ship;
  • Drink package starts on day 2 for cruises out of New York. Any drink on your first day goes on your Sign & Sail account;
  • Excluded are drinks served in the souvenir glasses or served through room service. So are bottles of liquor as well as buckets of beers;
  • You can’t buy a round of drink for others.
I say make a more informed decision. Carefully read through the pluses and minuses and make your decision from there.
